What will a new hospital give us
that we don’t have today?

For starters, a new hospital would bring something long missing for the Island’s sole provider of comprehensive medical care: “Pride of Place.” Imagine, as we have, a brand-new hospital where the quality of the environment would match the quality of the care. Planetree has already proven how important the setting is to both the patient and the caregiver in creating a healing environment. Although our old, leaking Hospital does not lessen the professionalism and quality of care in any way, it certainly does not inspire a sense of confidence as you cope with health issues large and small. The importance of pride, comfort and confidence cannot be overstated.

Just as important, however, is what a new hospital would do for our bottom line. Apart from what a new hospital will do to help us improve the delivery of medical care, a modern and thoughtfully organized new building could cut operating costs significantly. An up-to-date, compact and efficient building to replace the present sprawl, will save thousands in annual utility costs. Newly designed medical departments that are well thought out, closely interconnected and seasonally flexible will permit the consolidation of nursing stations and reduce staffing requirements and the associated high costs. Lastly, the combination of a brand-new hospital and our designation as a Critical Access Hospital will allow us to broaden therapies available at the Hospital that have been cost prohibitive or revenue limited in the past. As an example, we now have an opportunity to expand our Inpatient Rehabilitation Department to provide more extensive rehabilitation services and add a substantial and important new revenue source for the Hospital.

A New Beginning…

After much hard work and planning, we now have all the pieces in place – a growing and dedicated corps of healthcare providers that is passionate about providing the highest quality of care – a management team that is obsessive about responsible fiscal stewardship – a Board of Trustees that is unwavering in its resolve to become the best we can be – and a community that is unified in its passion for a hospital that is healthy, compassionate and committed to excellence.

It is time for us to begin anew.
