Sam R. Telford III, associate professor of biomedical sciences at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University is working to help relieve the public health burden posed by outbreaks of infections like Lyme disease and tularemia. By seeking to identify the mode of perpetuation of tick-borne infections like Lyme disease, tularemia, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis and deer tick virus, Telford hopes to discover interventions that may help reduce human risk.

Announce Annual Grants
For 63 years, the Mayhew-Nevin Memorial Fund has provided financial support to members of the Vineyard community needing help with their outstanding medical bills. At the end of last year, a grant in the amount of $30,100 was awarded to Martha's Vineyard Hospital that identified 94 qualified beneficiaries for assistance. Individuals and families were selected for this assistance based on need and effort to pay.

In 2007 MV Hospital transfused 375 units of blood, while the Red Cross Blood Drive drew only 278 Island donors. Blood must be available to help save the lives of accident victims, cancer patients, premature babies and other people who need this lifesaving gift. These people could be your family, friends or neighbors.
MV Hospital can receive a discount on blood products from the American Red Cross based on the Island community's blood donations. Your donation not only saves lives - it benefits your hospital.
No appointment is necessary, but pre-registration is available by calling the number below. Valid ID required.

Award for Patient Satisfaction
For the second year in a row, Martha's Vineyard Hospital has received the Summit Award from Press Ganey Associates, Inc. for excellence in patient satisfaction in its emergency department. The award was announced in ceremonies at the 2008 Press Ganey National Client Conference. Press Ganey is the industry's leading satisfaction measurement and improvement firm. MV Hospital Annual Health Fair
Each March, Martha's Vineyard Hospital invites health and human service providers to gather at the hospital to present a day of health screenings, demonstrations and lectures all geared to helping the island community learn more about improving their overall health and quality of life.

Sharps Drop-Off Program First Tuesday of Every Month • 8am - 3pm MV Hospital Loading Dock Entrance
Martha's Vineyard Hospital is pleased to offer a Sharps Drop-Off Program on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 8-3 p.m. This program is for members of the Vineyard community who seek a safe method to dispose of used needles and syringes. To drop off your used needles and syringes, please place them in a puncture-proof container and tape it securely closed.
PLEASE - NO MEDICAL WASTE FROM VETERINARY, DENTAL OR OTHER PROFESSIONAL PRACTICES.
Containers may be dropped off on the first Tuesday of each month at the loading dock entrance at the rear of the Hospital. There are signs and clearly marked containers located just inside the loading dock door.

"This past year we saw an outbreak of pertussis pneumonia (whooping cough), and we almost had a death associated with it. It was a child who hadn't been vaccinated. And in the Island schools last year we had an outbreak of chicken pox that was very worrisome..."

Windemere LPN Training Program
Funded by Grant
For Islanders already working hard just to make ends meet, the prospect of advancing a career through professional training seems an impossible dream - there just isn't time in the week for both school and work, and mainland educational institutions are dauntingly far away. But thanks to a $105,000 grant from the state and support from MV Hospital and Windemere Nursing & Rehabilitation Center valued at nearly $250,000, ten Windemere employees are realizing that dream this year.

Sullivan 5K Run/Walk

This is a great end-of-summer event for the whole family, from toddlers to grandparents. There's a Kid's Fun Run for children 10 and under with prizes for all. Adult and young adult racers may run or walk the US Track and Field Association Certified 5K course around the East Chop bluffs, with a spectacular view of Vineyard Sound.
