Support Staff
Nutrition Counseling
Nutrition Counseling is provided for all health and dietary
needs to both inpatients and outpatients. Some services
include weight loss, diabetes, high cholesterol, pregnancy
and overall wellness. Appointments are necessary, as well
as Physician Referral and Insurance coverage. Please call

Laboratory
A full-service, CAP-certified laboratory -- providing
service to the hospital, Windemere and physician's offices
both on-and-off island. Approximately 8% of tests ordered
are referred to outside laboratories (Quest or Imugen).
The laboratory provides a staff of technologists and phlebotomists
who offer both inpatient and outpatient services. No appointment
is necessary except for Tolerance Testing and Drug Screening.

Nursing
Nursing Administration provides oversight for the Department
of Nursing around the clock, 365 days per year. After-hours and weekend
coverage are provided by Nursing Supervisors, who can be
reached by beeper through the hospital telephone system.

Social Services/Case Management
This department provides mostly inpatient care, with some
coverage to outpatients when necessary. Social Services
provides a high-level of support to patients being admitted
and discharged from the hospital. They also offer assistance
to patients reviewing the hospital handbook, financial assistance,
and discharge planning.

Acute Care
The Acute Care department provides inpatient care for
Medical & Surgical Services, Orthopedic, Pediatric,
Geriatric and Gynecological Surgical Patients when necessary.
The department provides care 24 hours a day, seven days

Intensive Care Unit
The Intensive Care Unit provides care that is required
to critically ill patients. For further information, please

Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab
The Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation program is designed
to gradually recondition the heart, as well as muscles,
after a heart attack, open-heart surgery and other associated
procedures. The program consists of exercise and education,
and guides the patient to a heart-healthy lifestyle. Some
classes meet up to 36 sessions, depending on referrals and
coverage. The Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation program
is designed to effectively improve the quality of life for
those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by using
education, testing, exercise and counseling. The curriculum
intends to maximize the individual's ability to carry out
daily activities and to effectively cope with the many facets
of this disease. Both programs require a physician's referral.

Emergency Department
The Emergency department provides medical care to all
persons, ages 0-100+ years, without regard to health insurance
status. Hours of operation are seven days a week, 24 hours
per day. No appointment is necessary. Please call the department

Infusion Therapy
The Infusion Therapy program is designed to provide care
on an outpatient basis. Services include Blood Transfusion,
Phlebotomy, IV Antibiotics, Injections and Limited Chemotherapy.

Mammography
Screening exams are offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
and Friday and once a month on Saturdays. Diagnostic exams
are offered every Wednesday with a Massachusetts General
Radiologist. Appointments are necessary for both exams.

Renal Dialysis
The Dialysis department provides care on an outpatient
basis. Treatments are designed as therapy for persons whose
kidneys do not function properly. Appointment and doctor

Obstetrics/Midwife
The Maternity program provides family-centered care to
women of childbearing age and their families. When a pregnancy
becomes high-risk, patients are transferred by ambulance
or air to Boston Hospitals, and New England Medical Center,
or Children's Hospital. Childbirth classes are offered,
which are taught by the nurses on staff. A series of six
classes meets once a week on Thursday evenings. Please call

program addresses prenatal and gynecological care, issues
surrounding menopause and wellness throughout a women's

Rehabilitation & Wellness
The Rehabilitation & Wellness Department provides
Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy Services to both
inpatients and outpatients. The department was restructured
in 1999 to focus on manual therapy techniques including
craniosacral therapy, myofascial release and integrative
manual techniques. Individualized and group training is
offered for patient education, strengthening and self-management
strategies. Treatments include orthopedic and sports medicine
rehabilitation, neurological rehab, balance and vestibular
retraining, neck & back rehab and prenatal postpartum
rehabilitation, Seasonal Tai Chi classes are offered for
general wellness. Appointments and doctor's referral are

Radiology
The Radiology department has expanded its services over
the years as new technologies have become available to meet
the needs of the community. Radiology offers both inpatient
and outpatient services. Diagnostic imaging services available
in the Radiology department include General X-rays, CT Scans,
Ultrasounds and Echocardiograms. MRIs are available through
a mobile service that is offered every weekend. Appointments

Respiratory Therapy
The Respiratory Therapy department provides both inpatient
and outpatient services. Services available include Oxygen
Therapy, Nebulizer Treatments, Pulmonary Chest Therapy,
Ventilator Care and all other related modalities. Treatments
are provided to all patients including newborns and ER patients.
Outpatient Services provided by Respiratory Therapy include
Exercise, Stress Testing, Pulmonary Function Testing, Holter
Monitoring, 12 Lead EKGs and Arterial Blood Gas Drawing.
Appointments are only necessary for outpatient testing.

Substance Abuse/Acupuncture
The Substance Abuse/Acupuncture department provides vital
services to both inpatients and outpatients. Although we
offer many services, multiple services have been added to
treat addiction through the cooperation of other Island
agencies and the Island community. Some treatments include
Drug & Alcohol Addiction, Tobacco Program and Pain Management.
In addition, After Care is available. This program can include
counseling or, in some cases, Sober Housing. Appointments
are not necessary but referrals are needed in some cases.

Surgical Services
The Surgical Services department provides both inpatient and day surgeryservices including General Surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery. Appointments are necessary for elective cases. Please contact Surgical Services for further information at 508.693-9012.
Pediatrics
Vineyard Pediatrics provides pediatric/adolescent medicine. Office hours include the Walk-In Clinic, available Monday through Thursday, 8am to 11am and Fridays 9am to 11am. For further information please contact Vineyard Pediatrics at 508.693.2400.
Chapel/Chaplain
The Chapel and Chaplains are available to all patients
regardless of religious affiliation. A Chaplain can be reached
at any time by notifying your nurse or doctor. The Chaplains
are members of The Martha's Vineyard Clergy Association.
These dedicated clergy meet on a regular basis for continuing
education in the field of pastoral care with the desire
to offer patients the best possible service.
