Physicians & Departments
At Martha’s Vineyard Hospital we support patient-centered care and actively involve patients and their families in the design of new care models and in decision-making about individual options for treatment. The IOM (Institute of Medicine) defines patient-centered care as: "Providing care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient preferences, needs, and values, and ensuring that patient values guide all clinical decisions." This holistic approach to healthcare promotes mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and physical healing. It empowers patients and families through the exchange of information and encourages healing partnerships with caregivers. Patient-centered care seeks to maximize positive healthcare outcomes by integrating optimal medical therapies and incorporating art and nature among other modalities, into the healing environment.
